Male or female rats? If you have/had rats, please help me out?

So, I am hoping to add two new furry additions to my family soon. I’ve already posted a couple questions.. And I just have a few more.. Mainly to help me make some decision (I’m a horrible decision maker, and like other’s opinions), and help clear up a few things that I’ve been told different [...]

  1. I’m not sure about the cage, i would have to see it in person. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/pr… I have this cage for my rats and it has never been a problem.

For bedding and litter, i use Carefresh Ultra Bedding, i think it does the best job neutralizing odors; and I would recommend critter litter.

Toys, i give my rats the things you mentioned, but i also occasionally buy them bird toys which they really enjoy..i have one hanging from the top of their cage with a little bell that they love to ring.

They really don’t need a bed, mine are content to sleep under there little hut, but i do have a hammock that they really like to sleep in two. Both of them will go in it at the same time, there is no need to separate beds.

Food, i give my rats all sorts of things. For a base diet, i would recommend this http://www.petco.com/product/104860/Kayt… or just basic lab blocks, or both. I give my rats all kinds of fruits and veggies, cereals, oats, crackers, basically anything we can eat they can eat. Be careful with the sunflower seeds as they are quite fattening.
These are my rats absolute favorite treats http://www.petco.com/product/105284/Vita…

My two rats absolutely LOVE my dog. My dog is a 2 year old yellow lab, and very calm. He loves the rats. I introduced him to my first rats when the rats were little babies, i held them and let him sniff them and them sniff him. Eventually i had my dog on the bed and set the rats on the bed too, the were timid at first but they love each other now, its adorable.

I’ve only ever had male rats, but i have a friend who has females. My males have never had a problem with marking, in fact i can count on one hand the number of times they have peed outside of their cage. They rarely ever go pee or poop outside of their cage. I was kind of grossed out by the big balls at first too, haha. You get used to it though, i hardly even notice anymore. My boys are super sweet and cuddly, they have really different personalities though. One of them is very active, he loves to climb and explore, the other is quite lazy and content to just sit with me; both of them are cuddly though. My friend’s female rats are sweet too, but i think a tad less social with people than my males. But i couldn’t really tell you much about females since i have only owned males.

My first two rats were dumbos, and they weren’t any bigger than the two i have now who are your standard rats. Usually petco only has standard rats, and usually they are white with red eyes. A lot of people buy them as snake food.

I think its great that you’re researching! Good for you! It’s important to know what you’re getting into, especially with a living breathing animal.

Edit- i just realized the links don’t work..my apologies im not sure what happened. If you have any questions email me at kelsey103007@gmail.com

Ellie & amma’s babies, day 5, and the potential daddies…lol!

Some shots of the babies, catching up on day 5 now, with their new mommy “amma” taking good care of them. Breve, the rat obsessed Border Collie, checking them out and getting in a lick or two, and introductions to all five of the potential daddies… Bookmark It Hide Sites
